Bryan Jameson Hughes, of Nanuet, NY, died on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He was 30. Bryan was born on July 12, 1973 in Nyack. After graduating from Tappan Zee HS, Bryan earned his undergraduate degree in math and physics from Brown University and also received graduate degrees in physics from Boston University and in education from Harvard University. He was an actuary for New York Life Insurance Company in Manhattan. Bryan was a music lover and performer, and he was also a devotee of opera. He attended his first opera at the age of 4, and attended his last opera a few weeks before his death. He loved choral singing: he sang in his high school choral groups, in the Harvard Collegium Musicum, in the Columbia Collegium Musicum, and around the piano with his family. He played trumpet in bands and orchestras both at Tappan Zee and at Brown. He also played the piano and loved reading four-hand arrangements of classical symphonies with his father or with his brother Eric. Bryan showed great promise in mathematics from an early age. As an eighth grader, he was selected to be one of four students representing New York State at the National Mathcounts Competition. He and his three teammates scored higher than all other state teams, winning the nationwide team competition. He was also a voracious reader, and enjoyed many kinds of historical nonfiction, as well as science fiction. He loved traveling, camping and hiking. His numerous camping trips with his family took him to almost every state in the United States, as well as to the provinces of eastern Canada, and included visits to most of the National Parks in America and several hiking trips in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He climbed nine of the highest peaks in the White Mountains, including Mt. Washington, the highest. He also traveled in Europe on three occasions, visiting England, Italy, Switzerland, and France, and he traveled to Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa with his Grandmother Hughes, his two brothers, and two of his cousins. In his spare time, Bryan enjoyed reading, playing bridge, backgammon and board games with his family, working with the latest Macintosh computers and technology, and impatiently marking the days between the World Series and the first day of spring training. He is lovingly remembered by his parents C. James and Carole Hughes of Nanuet; by his brother Adam Hughes of Washington, DC; by his brother Eric Hughes of Tarrytown; by his grandfather George Lange of Winfield, IL; by numerous loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and by his many friends and colleagues. Visitation will be Friday, March 26th from 7-9 PM and Saturday, March 27th from 2-4 PM at Higgins Funeral Home, 321 S. Main Street, New City. A Memorial Service will be held in Bryan's memory at 4:15 PM on Saturday, March 27th, also at Higgins Funeral Home.
