Edward J. Harlan, 74, a lifelong resident of Sparkill, NY, died on January 29, 2001 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, NY. Edward was born October 15, 1926 in Nyack, NY, to Edward and Josephine Marshall Harlan. He graduated from the old Tappan Zee High School, Piermont, NY and served in the United States Navy during World War II in Guam. Following many years of service with the Town of Orangetown, Department of Public Works, he retired in 1986. Edward was a member of St. John‘s Church, Piermont, NY; the John Paulding Engine Company, Sparkill -Palisades Fire District.; the American Legion, John M. Perry Post #1044; and the Piermont Seniors. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed helping his many friends and neighbors in Sparkill. Edward is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Cecelia Lediger Harlan; two sons, Edward Harlan of Nyack, NY; Brother Michael Harlan, O.F.M. of Siena College Friary, Loudonville, NY; four daughters, Brenda Caputi and her husband Robert of Middletown, NY, Cely Tyszczenko and her husband Alex of Chestnut Ridge, NY, Terri Dertinger and her husband Paul of Pearl River, NY, and Clare Starink and her husband Paul of Tappan, NY. Edward is also survived by his sister, Mary Clifford of Sparkill, NY and his brother, John Harlan of Garnerville, NY; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Kevin Harlan in 1984 and his sister, Anne Tudesco, in 1997. The family will receive friends on Thursday, and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Stevenson Funeral Home, Piermont, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 3, 2001 at St. John‘s Church, Piermont, NY, at 10 am with burial to follow at Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern, NY, (c/o Cancer Foundation Department) or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (c/o Research), 1311 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, NY. 10605.
