Life After Tappan Zee
Doris DePaola HurbanChoosing to attend TZ from Tappan was one of the best decisions I ever made! Besides my many fond HS memories, I married my HS sweetheart!
Graduating from Alfred State College, marrying Tom Hurban, working on Park Ave. in NYC, having our daughter, Suzanne, then working closer to home in NJ while Tom completed dental school in Jersey City. After his graduation, we joined the Army at Ft. Bragg, NC, where our son, Mark, was born. Two years of service were followed by our big move to Hunterdon Co., NJ, where Tom set up his solo dental practice.
We lived in Flemington for 18 years, then moved to Pittstown when we built our dream home in 8 acres of pines. I worked part-time, off and on, for a real estate firm and a civil engineering firm, while always keeping the books for Toms practice.
Bowling teams, tennis teams, aerobics, biking and walking, and now golf have kept me active. I enjoy cooking, mainly Italian, and taught pastry and pasta making classes for adult ed. I participated in many volunteer organizations, recently as President of the Italian American Heritage Club of Hunterdon Co., now as a board member and recording secretary, and am currently President of our Ladies Investment Club, the Profit Seekers (if only that name was true of our history!).
For many years, we hosted exchange students from all over the world through Rotary International. We had the incredible experience of leading 5 bus loads of these exchange students across our great country twice, for which we both were awarded Paul Harris fellows from our Rotary district.
We have managed to do quite a bit of travelling, including finding my Moms relatives in Austria and my Dads family in Italy. Our French daughter even had us participate in her wedding near Lyon, though we were allowed to read in English from the altar! Our Brasilian son returned for our daughters wedding, our Argentinian came back with his family for a 3 week Christmas visit, etc. Im sure you get the idea. We have kids all over the world!
We have 3 grandsons: 2 in Flemington, 1 in Los Angeles.
Just a thought: our local HS has their annual reunion in Florida in Feb. each year, and get an amazing turnout. Seems as if everyone needs an excuse to get to Florida in winter. Many alumni fly from here just for the event, usually quite a casual affair. It even gets covered in the local paper, with so many people involved. Its a reunion of the school, not of a single class. Heres to the good life!
