Life After Tappan ZeeCarole Coates DeBrino
I graduated from Tappan Zee H.S. in 1960. We were the last class to graduate from the old T.Z. on the hill in Piermont.
After high school, I got a secretarial job with The New York Times in the city, where I worked for two years. I met Bill DeBrino, from Norwood N.J., who was a designer for an engineering company. We married on Oct. 27th, 1963.
I then got a job with Becton-Dickinson Pharmaceuticals in E. Rutherford where I was a private secretary to the head of the Research and Development department.
Bill and I have 4 children, so I spent the next 16 years raising them and being a full-time mom. Our oldest son, Paul, lives in Florida, is a computer consultant and web-site designer, and has a daughter 8 mos. old. Our oldest daughter, Gena, is a CPA, and heads the Auditing Department for a large pharmaceutical company in N.J. She has a daughter 3 years old. Our son, Robert, played minor league ball, as a pitcher, for the Minnesota Twins, for 5 years. He is a Certified Personal Trainer in a gym in Norwood and just got married the end of last year. Our youngest daughter, Dyan, was a 1st grade teacher before starting a family of her own. She has a little two year old boy and is expecting her second boy the beginning of June.
After my children were all in school, I went back to work for Prentice-Hall Book Publishers, where I worked for 20 years before retiring 3 years ago. Bill and I live in Northvale, N.J., a very quaint little town. We bought an old house, added a large addition, renovated and have been here for 35 years. We just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary the end of last year.
Our grandchildren are the loves of our life. Because we live so close to 3 out of the 4 of our children, we get to spend much quality time with them all.
Phew, time really flies! My four years at Tappan Zee were really wonderful, no teenager could have asked for anything better. We were a small class and were all friends.
Maybe someone, somewhere will get a reunion going again. It's been 24 years since the last one!
